Rare Coin
Investments (RCI) has been conducting its annual Spring
Ultra Rarities Auction since the Spring, 2001. In addition,
RCI held a special memorial auction of The Terry Armstrong
Signature Sale in the Fall, 2001, and has conducted private
auctions to select clients in order to place ultra rare
coins.
These auctions are targeted to the advanced collector of Morgan
and Peace dollars, many of whom are subscribers to RCI’s
quarterly newsletter, Top 100 Insights & Value Guide.
The auction provides a means for dealers and collectors wishing
to sell coins, to dealers and collectors wishing to buy them.
The auction creates and opportunity for a two-way market in
rare die varieties, and provides a written testimony, the auction
catalog, to the history of trading of these coins. In addition,
the hard copy and internet catalogs are excellent vehicles to
see coin images, study coins, varieties, and pedigrees, and
to gain valued insight into the advanced Morgan and Peace dollar
market. |

In the
Spring, 2003 auction, RCI utilized a new tool to market these
type of coins, the E-Bay live auction format. This meant that
obverse and reverse images of nearly 100% of the lots in the
auction could be seen by potential buyers worldwide, but more
importantly there would be much more market exposure for sellers.
It will likely take years before this market fully develops,
but I believe history will repeat itself just as is has done
with half cent varieties, large cent varieties, bust half varieties
and the evolution of collecting toward more specialization.
Why? It’s a simple case of supply and demand. The rarer
the coin, the more limited the supply. With the coin collector
base growing as a result Top 100 publicity, the State
Quarter Program, and information about new record prices in
other series, demand for these items will grow, and the prices
they command will increase. |

 |
 |
| Aside from
half cents, large cents and bust halves, the numismatic literature
is chock full of rare die varieties in each and every series
that command substantially more than the key dates to the series
in comparable grades. Just take a look at the 1922 no D Lincoln
cent, the 1943 copper cent, the 1916 doubled die buffalo nickel,
the 1918/17 S Standing Liberty Quarter, and the 1961 Franklin
half Proof doubled die reverse. |
